Moody music-video mixtape for October

This is the song where I sit still

Until our heartbeats drown out the clock ticking

And the song becomes I love you and always will

Recipe Roundup: Squash It Is

This recipe roundup is dedicated to Mom who inspired this month's ingredient: squash!
Mash it, bake it, drink it, stuff it... Go grab some squash at your local farmer's market and get cooking.
Yes, squash can be healthy- but somehow it just tastes better drenched in butter and brown sugar or topped with whipped cream!  Happy cooking!

We'll kick it off with the traditional baked acorn squash (this is one of the one's I'm talking about- drenched in butter & sugar)

The Invitation

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting in your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

“I want to know
if you know
how to melt into that fierce heat of living
falling toward
the center of your longing.”

For Mae

As a Child Enters the World

As I enter my new family,
May they be delighted
At how their kindness
Comes into blossom.

Unknown to me and them,
May I be exactly the one
To restore in their forlorn places
New vitality and promise.

Phenomenal Woman

"American Girl in Italy:" Ruth Orkin

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size

But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.

I say,

It's in the reach of my arms

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I'm a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That's me.

Charmed

I am thrilled by the latest in Wes Anderson's collection of whimsical films: Moonrise Kingdom.  I adore this film and can't wait to see it again!  His use of color, texture, framing, locations, and especially music take you to another place... somewhere innocent and magical.  He features tunes raging from Hank Williams' ballads to Britten performances by boys' choirs.  Totally charming!
See this... please.  .ryn

24 hours in nature

Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher.
-William Wordsworth

What happens when you spend 24 hours to looking closely at your surroundings?
You will find microsnails, slugs, rare wildflowers, blue-tailed skinks, eagles, hog-nosed snakes, mosses, turtles, bats.  You will hear whipoorwills calling in the trees, owls screeching, timberdoodles flapping slowly overhead, and katydids rehearsing for the summer season.
That's what we did in a Bioblitz, documenting every possible species of living creature we could find at a PA state park in 24 hours.
It was nice to take time to listen, watch, feel, and help.

Nocturne in Black and Gold, the Falling Rocket by James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Falling Stars
Do you remember still the falling stars

that like swift horses through the heavens raced

and suddenly leaped across the hurdles
 of our wishes--do you recall?
And we
did make so many!
For there were countless numbers
of stars: each time we looked above
we were
astounded by the swiftness of their daring play,

while in our hearts we felt safe and secure

watching these brilliant bodies disintegrate,

knowing somehow we had survived their fall.

-Rainer Maria Rilke

Cardboard arcade of dreams

3 a.m.

the night, i think, is darker than we can really say
and god’s been living in that ocean, sending us all the big waves
and i wish i was a sailor so i could know just how to trust,
maybe i could bring some grace back home to the dryland for all of us
